THE OBELISK
A mammoth and extraordinarily well crafted effort from Nonsun, “Black Snow Desert” is certainly a must for any avid drone/doom fan. Fans of the above mentioned as well as similar would do well to check this release out too.
THE SLUDGELORD
Listening to Black Snow Desert is like taking a pilgrimage through a constantly changing landscape...This isn’t music that you can just turn on as background music and then go about your business. There’s too much to miss, and the payoff from fully immersing yourself in the sound is too great.
METAL BANDCAMP
Nonsun composed sprawling lullabies for aliens suffering from amphetamine-induced insomnia...There is something spiritual about their music...invokes a similar feel to the surreal head space I find myself in when forget to take my meds and then wake up from the mid-day nap the following low swing induces...This album is just as much about the notes they don’t play as the ones they do. It’s the negative space that leaves the hollow longing...
CVLT NATION
This stark, pitch-black music drapes crawling drones atop distorted chords as huge as hills, while icy arpeggiated guitars meander in and out of phase with tolling bass and tumbling drums. Fried desert-rock riffs and clip-clopping percussion give the darkness a vaguely rustic flavor, but the album's eerie ambient passages and eruptions of distant thunder mostly bring to mind vast uninhabited spaces—the kind that make you think about how far away the wind comes from.
CHICAGO READER
With a dash of ethnic modal construction and percussion, in addition to some dabblings in noise and sound collage, Black Snow Desert is best described as a slowly shifting sandstorm, winds at lethargic speeds raising gargantuan clouds of dust before slowly disseminating them back across the plains. For fans of Earth, the more pensive side of Black Sabbath, and Boris!
CROSSFADER
They clearly owe a debt to Earth and with titles like ‘Ashes of Light, Demons of Justice’ and ‘Peace of Decay, Joy of Collapse’ they’re not afraid to show it. It’s a testament to how impressive the Ukrainian duo’s début album is that they can invite comparisons with the Seattle legends and not wither before them.
ECHOES AND DUST
If Sleep's 'Dopesmoker' was an epic journey through the deserts to the promised land of Jerusalem, this is a tripped-out, post-apocalyptic stumbling through mine-pocked landscapes on the way to something, anything better than this nightmare world we're creating for ourselves...It's time we began building our new list of the HeavyBest16.
DOOMED & STONED
I can clearly imagine this band playing in a dark, cold and damp basement venue in front of only a handful of people. Those people know they witness something unique, something intense...I'll be somewhere in the audience, with my eyes closed, listening to the droney goodness while my mind wanders off to a completely different dimension.
MERCHANTS OF AIR
Transcending in every form of the word, “Black Snow Desert” is the most psychedelic non-psychedelic album I’ve heard from such a heavy band in a long while and it would be an insult not to call this record not only refreshing but impressive.
